For many in Queensland’s resources sector, Christmas isn’t always spent around the family table. Whether you’re working FIFO, on-site, or simply feeling the pressure of the festive season, it’s normal to experience a mix of emotions at this time of year. Here are some practical tips to help you manage stress, look after your wellbeing, and stay connected – even if you’re far from home.
1. Plan Ahead and Stay Connected
If you know you’ll be away for Christmas, a little preparation goes a long way. Arrange gifts or surprises for loved ones before you leave, and schedule a video call for Christmas morning. Technology can’t replace a hug, but it can help you share in the joy of the day. If possible, plan a “second Christmas” celebration for when you’re home – something special for everyone to look forward to.
2. Create New Traditions
Being away from family doesn’t mean missing out on the festive spirit. Organise a small celebration with your crew, join in on-site activities, or start a new tradition – like a Christmas trivia night or a shared meal. These moments can help build camaraderie and ease feelings of isolation.
3. Look After Your Mental Health
The holidays can be a tough time emotionally for some, especially if you’re feeling lonely or under pressure. Remember, it’s okay to feel a mix of emotions. Reach out to colleagues, friends, or support services if you need to talk. Practising gratitude, taking a break from social media, and focusing on what you can control can all help manage stress.
4. Prioritise Safety and Self-Care
Fatigue, stress, and distractions can increase the risk of accidents at work. Make sure you’re getting enough rest, eating well, and taking time for yourself. If you’re celebrating, do so responsibly – look after your mates, and never drive or work under the influence.
5. Remember, You’re Not Alone
Many in our industry are in the same boat. Reach out, share your experiences, and support each other. Christmas is just one day, but the connections you build can last a lifetime.
Wishing everyone in the WIMARQ community a safe, healthy, and connected Christmas – wherever you are.
