It was a simple statement from Women in Mining and Resources Queensland (WIMARQ) Co-Chair Kristy Purdon, but one that resonated with many of the more than 250 women and allies who gathered in Moranbah to celebrate International Day of Women in Mining.
Growing up in a mining community, Kristy remembers a time when girls were often encouraged towards careers in hairdressing, administration, accounting or hospitality.
“That’s where I found myself,” Kristy shared.
“When I finally returned home to the mines and got a start onsite, mining gave me so much more than a pay cheque.
“It gave me a connection to community, a love for the many different areas and avenues there are in mining, and a strong relationship with my dad, bonding over bolts, shuttle cars and red wine.”
Looking around the room at the 2026 WIMARQ Coal & Gold Gala Dinner, it was clear how much had changed.
Held in Moranbah, the event brought together women and supporters from across the Bowen Basin to celebrate the contribution women make to Queensland’s mining and resources industry.
For one evening, hi-vis was swapped for formal wear as frontline workers, industry leaders, allies and community advocates came together to recognise how far the industry has come.
The gala highlighted the changes made in an industry that was not originally designed with women in mind. Those changes have come through the efforts of pioneers who challenged expectations, allies who championed inclusion, and women who stepped forward despite barriers that once seemed impossible to overcome.
Guests heard from a range of industry leaders and advocates including Queensland Resources Council Chief Executive Officer Janette Hewson, Anglo American Chief Executive Officer Daniel van der Westhuizen, Stanmore Resources Chief Development Officer Damian Zagel, guest speaker Jody Sainsbury and BMA Infrastructure and Services General Manager Bobbie Foot.
Their messages touched on leadership, mentoring, community investment, equity and personal growth, reinforcing the importance of creating workplaces where people feel valued, supported and able to succeed.
The evening also celebrated a significant milestone for the industry, with the Queensland Resources Council and WIMARQ recently welcoming the 1,000th participant into their mentoring program.
What stood out most was the sense of community in the room.
From apprentices and operators through to executives and advocates, the evening showcased the breadth of talent helping drive Queensland’s resources sector forward.
The event was made possible through the support of sponsors, speakers, guests and the broader Bowen Basin community, with ELAM recognised as the evening’s charity partner for its ongoing support of local individuals and families.
Kristy said the night represented much more than a celebration.
“Looking around the room, it’s clear those beliefs no longer define what’s possible for women in mining.
“The next generation is entering an industry that is stronger, more inclusive and full of opportunity.”
